5 things your kids will love about acrobatics class

What is acrobatics, or as we like to call it acro?

If you asked 100 people what acrobatics was you would probably get 100 different answers. There are so many variations and styles to this discipline that it is almost impossible to give it a short answer but let’s give it a go.

Acrobatics is a physical activity that involves learning, perfecting and achieving skills and then combining them with other forms or art such as dance, gymnastics, circus skills, theatre, diving and sometimes even football. From the basics of forward rolls, cartwheels and handstands to the more advanced skills of back handsprings, aerials and front tucks, acrobatic skills can be used in the playground or at an elite level, and that’s why we love it!

1. It’s fun!!!

Acrobatics can be so much fun, learning to flip and stand on your head (literally) what more can children want these days. I mean who didn’t want to learn how to handstand and cartwheel in the school playground with the other kids right? Learning Acrobatics often involves playful and imaginative elements such as tumbling, rolling and flipping which usually sparks joy for all children.

2. Improves mental health

The physical activity of acrobatics has been shown to have a positive impact on children's mental health by reducing symptoms of anxiety and enhancing self-esteem.

Getting the endorphins running through their bodies will be a sure way to improve their mood.

With each new skill mastered, students experience a significant surge of dopamine, a feeling that's impossible to put a price on. The happiness and joy they radiate is priceless, leaving a lasting impression on their coaches and peers.

3. They will become more ambitious and gain confidence

To have ambition is something that will help you in life more than almost anything else, but can you actually teach ambition? As a coach, I believe you can nurture and develop a student's ambition through the process of skill progression. The ambition and drive it takes to build up the courage to try a new skill on your own fosters that ambition and in turn the student gains confidence. Confidence not just on the gym floor but also in their everyday life. As a coach, I recognise that teaching acrobatic skills is the job, but it's the life lessons and values that students develop through this sport that truly bring me joy and fulfilment.

4. Builds strength and coordination

Have you ever tried a cartwheel or handstand with your child? It’s hard right! Even playing on the playground is exhausting! Acrobatics is the perfect way to keep fit and build strength for children’s growing bodies. By incorporating both upper and lower body strength exercises into the warm-up and throughout the class, acrobatics prepares students to perform more complex acrobatics as they develop their skills.

5. Join an inclusive community and make new friends

Signing up for an acrobatics class can be a transformative experience that offers numerous benefits. Not only will your kids have the opportunity to learn new skills and challenge their physical abilities, but they'll also be surrounded by like-minded individuals who share your passion for acrobatics. As they build relationships with their new friends, they'll gain a support system and develop a sense of confidence and self-esteem that can extend beyond the gym floor.
